Fetal Echocardiography is a detailed evaluation of a baby’s heart by a pediatric cardiologist specializing in fetal echocardiography through telemedicine. This is a test using ultrasound to study the structure of a baby’s heart before birth. The obstetrician may have obtained a limited view of the baby’s heart during routine ultrasound. Some pregnant women are at increased risk of giving birth of a baby with congenital heart disease
Who needs a detailed fetal echocardiogram?
- Family history of congenital heart disease
- Abnormal fetal heart rhythm
- Fetal heart abnormalities suspected on a routine scan
- Other fetal structural abnormalities
- Insulin dependent diabetics
- Exposure to drugs and or medications
- Possible chromosome abnormalities
When can a fetal echocardiogram be done?
Recommended at 20-24 weeks gestation
Who can counsel or advise me about cardiac findings?
- A pediatric cardiologist will discuss the findings and will provide management recommendations
- A maternal-fetal medicine specialist will advise you on the management of your pregnancy
- A genetic counselor will advise you on any genetic related syndrome findings
